Mirena IUD Injuries

Mirena IUD Injuries

The intrauterine device (IUD) Mirena is intended to stay in place for five years. It’s a popular option because it’s a highly effective form of contraception that doesn’t require remembering to take a pill every day. But it appears that Mirena can cause internal injuries that seriously harm women, and many of these victims are taking legal action.

The attorneys at Houston Personal Injury Lawyers are committed to helping women who have suffered from the serious complications associated with Mirena. Our attorneys are experienced with pharmaceutical litigation, and we know what it takes to build a strong Mirena lawsuit to get injured women compensated for their suffering and the damage done to their lives.

There is no cost and no obligation to have an attorney review your Mirena IUD injury case.

What is Mirena?

Mirena is an intrauterine device, or IUD, manufactured by Bayer Pharmaceuticals. The FDA approved Mirena in 2000. While Mirena is typically used as a form of birth control, it is also approved to help control heavy menstrual bleeding.

When the Mirena IUD is inserted in the uterus, it releases a low dose of the hormone levonorgestrel – the same drug found in some birth control pills – to prevent pregnancy. Delivering the drug straight to the uterus requires a lower dose than in pill form. The device is meant to be effective for up to five years, and it must be inserted and removed by a doctor. Barring complications, it does not affect long-term fertility after the device is removed.

Currently, Mirena is the only hormonal IUD available in the U.S. However, since it has been on the market, reports of serious complications have been mounting. The device may puncture the uterus or migrate elsewhere in the body, causing a potentially very dangerous situation.

Complications and Side Effects of Mirena
Over the years, the FDA has received tens of thousands of complication reports from Mirena user, and many of these women have filed a Mirena IUD lawsuit.  According to the FDA, complications include:
  • Perforation of the uterus or cervix
  • Device migration
  • Infection
  • Pelvic inflammatory disease
  • Infertility
  • Ectopic pregnancy
  • These complications may require removal of the device through surgery. Some of these side effects may be life-threatening.

In 2009, the FDA sent a warning letter to Bayer alleging that they had downplayed the risks associated with the use of the Mirena IUD, while overstating its benefits. The FDA accused the company of claiming Mirena may make women “feel better,” though there is no evidence to substantiate this vague claim.

This is not the first time that Bayer has come under fire for its birth control products. Since 2009, Bayer has paid more than $400 million to settle cases regarding its birth control pill Yaz.

Mirena IUD Lawsuits

Currently, more than 1,100 Mirena lawsuits have been consolidated for pre-trial action in a New York federal court. This is not a class action lawsuit, however. Once pre-trial issues are settled, each case will be tried or settled individually depending on its merits.

These women are seeking compensation for the pain they endured through no fault of their own. Perforation and other complications associated with Mirena are not minor inconveniences; they are serious conditions that affect day-to-day life for thousands of women. If this has happened to you, you should join the women seeking justice.

Bayer must be held accountable for its product and the harm it has caused. The best way to do this is to take legal action by filing a lawsuit against the company. The Mirena IUD lawsuits accuse Bayer of allegedly:
  • Deceptively marketing Mirena
  • Failing to adequately warn of its risks
  • Defectively manufacturing Mirena
  • Knowingly selling and marketing a defective device
