Two Dozen Universal Health Services Hospitals Under Investigation

More than two dozen Universal Health Services hospitals throughout the country are under federal criminal or civil investigation for fraud and other abuses, according to UHS Behind Closed Doors, a project of the Service Employees International Union. Universal Health Services, Inc., based in Pennsylvania, is the country’s largest provider of inpatient behavioral health care. Its corporate office is also being investigated by the U.S. Department of Justice Criminal Fraud for allegations of fraudulent billing of Medicare and Medicaid billing.

Failure to have systems in place that protect patients from abuse and harassment are two areas in which UHS has failed, according to the website. It points to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services and lists the systemic components that hospitals must have in place to protect patients.

In addition to the federal investigations, UHS hospitals are also the subject of lawsuits by patients and their families, including numerous lawsuits related to sexual misconduct and sexual assault by doctors and other staff.
